Final three years of contract could now be guaranteed
MINNEAPOLIS — Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to restructure the final three years of the running back’s contract.
The announcement was made Tuesday, as players report for training camp Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
Terms weren’t disclosed, but it looks as though Peterson will get more guaranteed money. The 30-year-old’s existing deal called for a $12.75 million salary this season, but after that, his contract wasn’t guaranteed.
“I appreciate the Vikings for working together on this restructured contract, which provides additional security for me but also allows opportunities for me to further prove my value to the team and within the NFL,” Peterson said. “It was important for me to continue my career in Minnesota, and I cannot wait to get on the field in front of Vikings fans again.”
The running back returned to the team on June 2, after an 8½-month “suspension” that began when Peterson was indicted on child injury charges last September. He had threatened to hold out on the team following the episode, saying the Vikings did not support him
Now, however, it looks as though Peterson remain in Minnesota beyond this season.
“This agreement is a win for both Adrian and the Vikings and is a positive step toward Adrian finishing his career as a Minnesota Viking,” Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said.
