The 31-year-old could make two starts before trade deadline

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Matt Garza came off the 15-day disabled list today for the opener with the Cleveland Indians.

Is this an audition for Garza to be dealt before the MLB trade deadline on July 31? He could make two starts before that date.

It may be tough to trade the oft-injured 31-year-old right-hander for a multitude of reasons. One, he’s not cheap. Two, he’s hasn’t been any good.

He’s 4-10 this season with a 5.55 ERA. He’s pitched 99 innings with 68 strikeouts and 33 walks.

Garza is signed through the 2017 season with a 2018 vested option. He’ll make $12.5 million through 2017 and anywhere from $5 million to $13 million in 2018 depending on qualifications.

Last year Garza went 8-8 with a 3.64 ERA. He pitched 163⅓ innings with 126 strikeouts and 50 walks.

Garza hit the DL with right shoulder tendinitis before the all-star break.
