Brewers-Mets: Deal-No deal

Gomez traded. Gomez not traded.

The Milwaukee Brewers almost got in on the trade-deadline action Wednesday night. In fact, most news sites reported the team actually did make a blockbuster deal.

Now, the confusion isn’t just why the deal didn’t go through, but who backed out?

It was thought that outfielder Carlos Gomez was headed to the New York Mets for injured pitcher Zack Wheeler and shortstop Wilmer Flores.

Some reports are the Brewers backed out because of Wheeler recovering from Tommy John surgery, which would make sense, since the 25-year-old has yet to pitch this season.

But, other reports are that the Mets backed out of the deal because of Gomez’s ailing hip.

If that’s not strange enough, Flores even made headlines, as rumors swirled at home in Citi Field that the trade was done – yet Flores was still in the game. The crowd gave him an ovation in what was thought of as his last at-bat as a Met and then you could see tears in his eyes as he came out to play shortstop in the next inning.

That was also a sign the deal was not a deal, because he was, of course, still in the game.
