Logan pulls away from Sparta

ONALASKA, Wis. – Big plays, comebacks and overtime, you couldn’t ask for much else in a football game.

In the end, it was Jalen Zubich’s 1-yard touchdown run in overtime that led Onalaska High School to the 33-26 win over Central.

Zubich carried the ball a ridiculous 38 times for 188 yards and scored three times for the Hilltoppers (2-1, 1-0) in this Mississippi Valley Conference opener Friday.

Onalaska got ahead 13-0 after the first quarter, but Central stormed back in the second with two huge plays – a Bailey Kale 70-yard touchdown reception from Matt Johnson and then a Connor Williams 59-yard run to pull within 13-12 at halftime.

Zubich put Onalaska back up 20-13 late in the third quarter, before another Central (0-3, 0-1) big play – a Waylon Alvarado 66-yard touchdown run.

The big plays didn’t end there. The Hilltoppers’ Jalen Sample answered on his second touchdown reception from Braylon Duin – this one from 69 yards out to end the third.

Down 26-20 heading into the fourth, the Red Raiders’ Kale came through again, this time on defense with a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown to tie the game with just over 8 minutes to go, and eventually force overtime.

Onalaska outgained Central 455-204. Williams had 127 yards rushing for the Red Raiders, while Duin finished 6-for-23 for 122 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

LOGAN 31, SPARTA 14

SPARTA, Wis. – It was close early, but the Rangers pulled away in the second half, after being up just 17-14 at the break.

Manny Buckhanan had 21 carries for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while teammate Trey Davis was 10-for-16 for 129 yards. Logan (2-1, 1-0) outgained the Spartans (0-3, 0-1) 490-239.
